1st Grade Unit : DPI Place Value 

Suggested Dates: Dec. 17- Dec. 20

Estimated Duration: 4 days (2 lessons)

*First two lessons of DPI UNIT

Begin with the End in Mind: By the end of this unit, students should be able to respond to the following prompts:

Create a place value mystery in your Math Journal. Write down your strategy for solving your mystery.

Create your own arrow card to share with the class. Write an addition sentence that matches your arrow card.

How can the ten frame work be used to further develop students’ understanding of tens and ones?

At this point in the year only spend time on the activities in the first 2 days of this unit. Students will need multiple experiences with these activities in a workshop/center format. Feel free to also include workshop activities on problem solving and counting strips.

 -Help students create a representation for numbers that they struggle with.

-Work with low teen numbers (11-14) first before moving into work with larger numbers. 


-Provide opportunities for students to use numbers 20-29, once they have mastered 0-19.  -Allow students to create place value mysteries independently.
