STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE

MP2.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively

How can we provide opportunities to help students break a number apart and reason about the amount of tens and ones in a number?

How can hundreds charts support students’ work in this unit?

MP6.  Attend to precision

What experiences can we provide students to communicate and reason about their understanding of place value?

MP7.  Look for and make use of structure

How can the ten frame work be used to further develop students’ understanding of tens and ones?

TEAM TIME!
DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR GRADE LEVEL TEAM:

Check out the unpacking document for 1st grade and discuss appropriate standards and examples.

Read and discuss this article about the benefits of playing math games.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIFFERENTIATION...

Suggestions for students who are struggling...

Help students create a representation for numbers that they struggle with.

Work with low teen numbers (11-14) first before moving into work with larger numbers.

Suggestions for students who fully understand...

Provide opportunities for students to use numbers 20-29, once they have mastered 0-19.

TAKE NOTE
At this point in the year only spend time on the activities in the first 2 days of this unit. Students will need multiple experiences with these activities in a workshop/center format. Feel free to also include workshop activities on problem solving and counting strips.

CLASSROOM ROUTINES
During this time, review Classroom Routines from earlier in the semester or spend extra time each day on the DPI workshop activities.
