Before You Begin this Unit…  Unit at a Glance 

This Investigation is following the work of Unit 7 to build on students understanding of strategies based on place value and representations for multiplication and division of whole numbers. The idea is that students would better be able to see connections between what is happening to the decimal point as they multiply and divide and articulate/represent the patterns that they are noticing. You may want to have anchor charts from the work of unit 7 up in the classroom. Students will need to refer to them and consider how these representations and strategies work when multiplying numbers less than 1 and between whole numbers. Decimals may be very abstract your students still. Reasoning about products and quotients will be a critical step in the work of this unit. The rounding work that students completed in the first part of unit 6 will play a large role in supporting this reasoning.
